Swimming And Water Safety For Kids

Published: July 21, 2011

We all know how dangerous water can be. It’s important to ensure kids safety when it comes to water whether it is while swimming or in the bathroom. Kids need to be constantly supervised when around water. They can easily drown in water that is just 6cm. This is why parents should always take caution.

Teaching your child how to swim is important. However, never make the mistake of thinking that a child can’t drown just because they can swim. Even good swimmers can easily end up drowning. Kids must be constantly supervised especially toddlers.

Safety At The Pool

Having a swimming pool at home can be very dangerous. Homes with swimming pools need to have a fence and a safe net. The gates of the fences should always be closed and the nets be put on properly. Fences need to be 4 feet high and not enable kids to climb on or over them easily. The openings on the fence should be small in size so that kids can’t get through them. Get fences with gates that close or latch by themselves and kids should not easily get to the latch. Doing this greatly reduces the risks of kids drowning in swimming pools at home.

Water Safer In The Home

Ensuring water safety in the home is very important. Most parents think that they need to apply caution only outside the home. The bathroom and toilet can be very dangerous places for kids and can easily cause drowning. Never leave kids alone in the bathroom or toilet. Also keep electrical appliances away from the bath tub to prevent electrocution.

Reduce risks of scalding or burns by lowering the water heater thermostat. Kids have very thin skin and can therefore get burnt very easily. Landing in very hot water can easily cause them to get third degree burns. Test the temperature of the water with your elbow to make sure it’s not too hot for the child.

Teach Kids To Be Water Wise

Teach kids to wise when it comes to water safety. There are a number of ways to get kids to take the right precautions in water. Teach them to never play around the pool or any area that has water close by. This way you lower the risk of them falling in the water and drowning. They should also immediately get out of the water when there is bad weather like lightning and never dive in unmarked areas. Also teach them the importance of having lifeguards around when swimming and to always go to them during emergencies.

Other ways to ensure water safety is to make sure that everyone knows what to do during emergencies at home. Teach everyone CPR and have as many safety equipment as possible. Keep emergency numbers close by and make sure everyone knows them. Clear away all toys from the pool area as kids sometimes drown while trying to take toys from the pool.
