Fire Safety Tips For Kids

Published: July 21, 2011

Fire is one of the main causes of accidents in most home. It’s important to teach children at an early age the dangers of fires. However, never put fear in the child. The right way is to teach them the dangers of fire and what to do in case there is a fire at home.

Here Are A Few Common Tips:

Never allow kids to use kitchen or electrical appliances at home without adult supervision. Keeps wires and plugs out of reach or keep them covered. Lights should not be next to beds, curtains or other fabrics in the home. Use items like electric blankets cautious as they can easily cause serious accidents.

These Are A Few Household Items To Be Cautious About:

Candles

When using candles, keep them at a safe distance, about 3 feet away. Never leave kids alone in a room with a candle that is on. Adults should always put candles out when leaving a room.

Kitchen Appliances

Keep easily flammable items like paper, tissues, cloths and towels away from the stove. Always assist kids when they use kitchen appliances and never leave them alone. Never let a child come too close to a stove that is on, keep them at a safe distance. When cooking, always remain in the kitchen and don’t let kids go there.

Matches And Lighters

Kids usually like playing with matches. Therefore parents should always put matches and lighters far away and out of reach from kids. If possible put them in locked cupboards and teach kids how dangerous they are. Also teach them to give them to an adult whenever they find them.

Electrical Cords

Always check the quality of electrical cords and plugs. They can easily get damaged and spark a fire in the home. Do a routine check through the home and try to keep them covered.

Heaters

Heaters can be very dangerous in homes so it’s important to use them with caution. Avoid using an oven to keep the home warm as this is very dangerous. Don’t put heaters next to furniture, fabric or equipment in the home as heaters can easily cause them to burn lead to a fire. Turn off all heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep. Never leave them on as this is very risky and dangerous.

Other Things To Consider To Ensure Safety:

Parents should make sure that they install smoke alarms in most areas of the home. This should be in each room, sleeping area and level of the house. Always check and test these smoke alarms to make sure that they still work effectively. Ensure that each room has at least two exits in case of an emergency. Everyone in the home should know what to do when there is a fire in the house. Also get out of the house whenever there is a fire until you get help. Make sure that everyone knows the number for the fire department.
