Baby Proofing Your Home

Revised: July 21, 2011

Homes with babies all need to be child proofed. It’s the only way to ensure the safety of the baby and prevent a number of accidents. As kids get older, homes start to get more dangerous for them. Parents need to child proof their home as soon as the baby starts crawling.

Ways To Baby Proof Your Home:

Furniture

As soon as babies start crawling they start pulling and holding on to everything around the house. Be especially cautious of bookcases and other furniture items they can easily climb and grab onto. Put floor lamps behind other furniture in the house so that they can’t get to them easily. Try to bolt as much of the furniture items in the home onto the wall. This way they can’t fall on the child when they pull or hold onto them.

Keep home appliances and televisions out of reach and also be sure to secure them. Heavy items should always be placed down or at the bottom of the shelves. Prevent your baby from being hurt by the corners of the furniture items. Items like tables could easily hurt the baby. Try to keep them covered with bumpers so that the baby does not get seriously hurt when they accidently bump on them.

Blinds And Curtains

Blinds are very dangerous and can easily hurt the child by getting them caught in the cords. To prevent this just keep the baby crib away from the blinds, cut off the cords or use wind-ups so that they are out of reach. Also simply replace the cord loops with safety tassels.

Protecting Outlets

Always keep all electrical outlets covered with outlet covers. Choose those covers that have a safety latch. The other types can be easily removed by the child and there is a high risk of them ending up in their mouth. Also be sure to insulate all junction points using an electrical tape if there are any extension cords around.

Install Safety Gates

Safety gates are the most commonly used form of child proofing item. They make sure that the child does not leave the room they are in or end up in danger. However, they can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Therefore it’s important to get safety gates that can’t be opened easily and those that can be screwed onto the wall.

Keep Windows And Doors Secure

Fit top windows with locks so that the child can’t open them easily. Get windows with window stops so that windows can’t get opened too widely. Also install window guards on the windows as window frames can also be very dangerous. Never put furniture next to the windows as the child can climb on them and reach the windows. Children usually get into accidents with doors by getting their hands and fingers crushed when the door closes. To prevent children from injuring their hands, get door holders or door stops.

Easily apply the baby proofing tips to keep your baby safe while allowing them as much freedom as possible around the house.
